Piper excelsum (formerly known as Macropiper excelsum) of the pepper family (Piperaceae) and commonly known as kawakawa, is a distinctive large rounded shrub with green branchlets and attractive glossy dark green heart shaped leaves. The spikes of inconspicuous cream flowers are followed by a bright orange fruiting spike. Looks great planted under trees and with other bushy shrubs. Prefers a sheltered shady site, hardy to dry and some frost.Endemic to New Zealand
